i still consider a prime bob gibson maybe the greatest pitcher ever. the early 1970's vida blue could have been an all time great if not for personal problems.

Bob Gibson was arguably the best World Series pitcher in baseball history despite losing game 7 of the 68 series to Mickey Lolich and the Detroit Tigers. He won seven consecutive games and pitched eight straight complete games in World Series competition. Only Whitey Ford owns more World Series victories than Gibson, who is also second all-time in WS strikeouts. He only played in three series suffering only the one loss mentioned.

Gibson's 1.12 ERA in 1968 ...other pitchers that stand out to me, Guidry's 1978 season, Vida in 1971, Carlton winning all those games(27) for a horrible Phils team...Clemens STILL going strong, Doc Gooden 1985 season, Seaver greatest NL pitchers of the 70's , Palmer greatest AL pitcher of the 70's ,Nolan Ryan being better in his 40's than his 30's or 20's and his 7 career No-no's....Randy Johnson's insane winning pct over a 10 year period.

Bob Gibson's stats are insane, the line from 1968 might be the greatest season ever. He went 22-9 with a 1.12 ERA! Started 34 games, had 28 complete games and 13 shutouts. Who is ever going to have a better season than that? That came after being the MVP of the World Series the year before. In the 67 WS he started 3 games, won all 3, each a complete game. His ERA for the series was 1.00. In his three career WS, he went 7-2 with a 1.89 ERA. He threw a complete game in 8 of his 9 starts. Simply amazing, you can't compare the guy to anyone these days and it may be 100 years before a talent like that comes again.

Badly torn ligaments in 1973 did Gibson in, he retired late in the 1975 season. Many people never mention Gibson's fielding, from 1965 to 1973 he won nine consecutive Gold Gloves. He was also a decent hitter. He had 24 regular-season home runs plus a pair in World Series play. In 1970 he batted .303 and was occasionally employed as a pinch hitter.

A pitcher's career percentage is the average of his single-season percentages weighted by the number of innings he pitched in each season.

Here are the top 10 active pitchers in career RA as a percentage of league RA, through Wednesday's games (minimum 1500 IP):

Pitcher %LgRAPedro Martinez 60Roger Clemens 70Greg Maddux 71Randy Johnson 75Mike Mussina 75Curt Schilling 78Kevin Appier 80Kevin Brown 81David Cone 83Tom Glavine 83</PRE>

Martinez is so good here it's scary. The closest all-time career %LgRA to Martinez's 60 is Lefty Grove, with 69.

The Big Unit 10 year run (1993-2002)

175 - 58

Off the top of my head I'm not sure any pitcher ever had such a winning pct in baseball history for any 10 year period.

I always scratch my head when I see those 9 losses from Gibson in '68...with that 1.12 era...those Cards must have never supported him much, he didn't have a great winning pct, considering.

PEDRO has the 2ND highest winning percentage ALL-TIME of pitchers with at least 100 career victories.

Who is #1?

My guess was Whitey Ford, but I know he's slightly UNDER 70%.

I remember watching Gibson pitch the first game of the 1968 World Series. He struck out 17 and had the best stuff I've ever seen (at least it looked that way on TV). Guys were ducking out of the way of his curveball which then proceeded to break about 2 feet down and over the plate.

I think Sandy Koufax had the best curve ball ever.

The best curve ball I have ever seen in my lifetime was that of MARK CLEAR
